You'd find that the bathhouse setup is actually extremely common in japanese media. That's even made quite clear in the actual episode in that anime as whilst bathing the engineering crew asks the captain what's going on with the mission since they've been working in the bowels of the ship, they had little clue as to the general situation other than being asked to go full power all the time. All kinds of different people from different social statuses come together with literally nothing seperating them from another. Meeting with people and strangers in a public bath in Japan is a bonding metaphor. The kind of stuff that in the western cultures is typically reserved for one's own bathroom at the start and end of a day. And I don't mean bathing as in going for a swim in a pool like many would quite possibly assume. Public bathing is actually a significant thing in Japan, completely dwarfing anything even closely resembling in the western world.
